What is pilates?

The Pilates method was created by Joseph Pilates in 20th century Germany. It was primarily used as a rehabilitative or enhancement exercise. Pilates conditions the body as to increase flexibility, strengthen and lengthen muscles, and perform all postural and challenging activity while strengthening and stabilizing the core. The core, or “power- house” postural muscle around the body’s center that we work to move with strength, length, agility, and proper alignment. In order to strengthen the core, while toning all parts of the body, Pilates accentuates the importance of the abdominal, pelvic and back muscles all working together to support a healthy form. With this movement understanding we create an anchor for the body to operate safely from. Because of its specificity Pilates can be used to help aid in back pain, prevent injury, enhance athletics, and simply feel better. Pilates is often taught on the mat with a few props, and proper studio’s or fitness facilities incorporate the full Pilates apparatus. The Pilates equipment use a gentle resistance based system to help the muscles both strengthen and lengthen in alignment. The machines used in our studio include: The Reformer, Cadillac(Trapeze Table), Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, Springs, and various props.

Pilates is an excellent way to rehabilitate injuries and conditions including; back pain, disc dysfunction, neck issues, knee injuries, hip injuries, ankle instability, frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, rotator cuff issues, scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, etc. We can also use Pilates as a preventative method for all potential injuries. We also encourage prenatal and postpartum women to enroll in a Pilates program. Pilates can actually aid the body in both carrying and through child birth, as well as, rehabilitate musculature and pelvic floor after.

Anyone can have a Pilates practice.
